Hurricane season is here. While the forecast can always change, Midland's Meteorologist, Bruce Jones shared a look at what experts are predicting for the 2025 season.Ā

Hurricane Season 2025

The Atlantic tropical storm season runs from June 1 to November 30. This is the time of year when warm ocean water and calm wind conditions make the atmosphere of the Caribbean, the Gulf, and the eastern seaboard ripe for the development of tropical storms and possibly hurricanes.Ā

In the weeks leading up to hurricane season, tropical weather experts and the National Weather Service issue forecasts for how active the upcoming season will be.Ā

Spoiler alert: 2025 has a 60% chance of seeing ā€œabove averageā€ activity. This, according to forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), arguably the best tropical weather experts on the planet.

2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook

Preparing Ahead of Time

When it comes to hurricane preparedness, or tornado preparedness, or kitchen fire preparedness, lots of us procrastinate; myself included. Someone who lives in the hurricane zone could look at this forecast and think a 60% chance of a busy season is not worth worrying about. Would a 90% chance sway them?

How about this: if there is only one single hurricane this year (normal number is 7), and that one single storm levels your seaside home, or surrounds it with water, wouldn’t that be a 100% hit on you and your family?Ā

As an example, 1992 was a lackluster hurricane season. In fact, the season looked like a total bust until one storm named Andrew roared across Florida on August 24, becoming one of the costliest weather disasters in US history. Thousands lost their homes, and the complete cleanup and recovery took ten years. Regardless of how active the season was supposed to be, just one single storm was bad enough to rewrite history.

"Above Normal" Forecast

As we enter another hurricane season, pay heed to the ā€œabove normalā€ forecast, but don’t use it as your sole motivator.

Every year, every home, school, and business in America’s hurricane zone should get ready for a direct hit.

Have a plan, build a kit, and be prepared. The plan includes multiple, redundant ways to receive life-saving information from the National Weather Service, so in addition to your smart phone and local TV weather teams, get a NOAA Weather Radio. These devices are triggered by a direct radio broadcast from your nearest National Weather Service office.Ā

The Need for NOAA Weather Radios

Working much like a smoke detector, a weather radio silently monitors ā€œThe Voice of the National Weather Serviceā€, then automatically alerts you when it receives a watch or warning. There’s no faster way to receive these official bulletins, and you get them direct from the source.

There are two styles of weather radio to consider. A Public Alert-certified desktop radio like the Midland WR120 NOAA Weather and Emergency Alert Radio - WR120 can be programmed to alert for only your county. It features battery backup so it continues to operate during power outages, and its 77-decibel alert tone wakes you from the deepest sleep.Ā

For the deaf and hard of hearing, an optional strobe light and pillow shaker can be plugged into the WR120.

These radios should be as common in homes as smoke detectors.

Emergency Crank Radios

Emergency crank radios are excellent for hurricane evacuation, shelter-in-place, or the aftermath of a storm, when power may be out for days or weeks.

In October 2018, maximum strength Hurricane Michael ravaged the Florida peninsula, knocking out electricity and cell phone service for weeks.Ā Hand-cranked radio was the only effective way to receive information.

The Midland ER310 Portable Emergency Crank Weather Radio - ER310 has twin battery sources and a solar panel to provide AM/FM/Weather Alert radio reception anytime you need it.Ā  It also features a super bright LED flashlight. Make the ER-310 your ā€œsurvivalā€ radio for both home and travel.

Tropical Cyclone Names

Watch in 2025 for these named tropical cyclones. Even if a lackluster season generates no more than one storm, Andrea could blow up into a ā€œHurricane of the Centuryā€.Ā  Make sure whatever may come your way, you and your family will be survivors and not statistics.
