Going the Distance with 5 Watt Walkie Talkie Radios

Going the Distance with 5 Watt Walkie Talkie Radios

Long range two-way radios are exactly what they sound like and simultaneously not. These radios have a maximum long distance in “optimal conditions” which means they only work at that distance is there are zero obstructions — i.e. line-of-sight. Trees, buildings, and mountains can all interfere with the range.

FRS vs GMRS Basics

Family Radio Service or FRS is intended for communicating over short distances. Generally, 0.5 watt (o.5W) channels cover less than a half mile while 2W channels work up to two miles. FRS radios have a maximum allowable power of 2W. General Mobile Radio Service or GMRS are higher powered devices that use systems and repeaters to increase the range of the radio. GMRS systems require a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) license to operate. GMRS radios have a maximum allowable power of 50W.

FCC Regulations

At the end of 2017, the FCC revised their channel designations and regulations to reclassify dual band FRS/GMRS radios. Previously, these hybrid devices required an FCC license. Now they are considered an FRS-only unit and do not require a license.
