Solid performer
I've had the MXT400 for about a week and tested it between the house and barn and the house and the bee yard a few hundred yards away with woods in between. Needless to say, for this the lowest power is plenty. Audio crisp and clear. Next tested between the house and car in about a five to seven mile radius where 90% of my errands occur. Again it made contact with the MTX100 in the house (the little antenna on the kitchen table!) though the 5 watt model couldn't return the contact with this primitive set up and I wouldn't expect it to. I look forward to finding this unit's limits but so far so good. I am happy with the purchase.

YOU JUST CAN’T BE UNHAPPY WITH THIS RADIO ‼️
I bought this MXT400VP3 bundle, radio + accessories just a few weeks ago directly from Midland. I already had a 13.8 volt power supply but it proved to be too small. I purchased a Tekpower TP30SWI power supply which provides additional ampere headroom.
I couldn’t be more pleased with this setup. The radio and power supply run cool to the touch which, as a retired Broadcast Engineer, will greatly increase the lifespan of both units!
Midland shipped the MXT400VP3 promptly, and FedEx handled the shipment promptly, even with all the terrible weather we’re having.
I couldn’t be more happy with this GMRS radio setup.

The Powerhouse of GMRS !
Several of us bought the MXT400VP3 and all agree that this is the system to have in your Jeep or any other vehicle for all that matters. We were easily getting crystal clear reception of each others transmissions as far as 26 miles out ! The CB radios are coming out and we are sticking to the MXT400 radio from now on.

MXT400VP3 Bundle
I purchased the bundle a few weeks ago,and it includes everything you need to install it (radio, cable, antenna, and antenna mount). It installed easily and quickly, and you don't need any specialty tools (depending upon your install). The antenna reception works great and can pick up other users from a great distance away.
I haven't had a chance to use it in the field however, so i can't I can't comment on that. Unfortunately, the antenna is not very flexible, and I drove under a parking garage and it broke off. Clearly my fault for not confirming the new height, but I also have a CB in my vehicle which has a spring on it, and drive under garages all the time with no issues.
A new antenna is on the way - bought an antenna with a spring this time.
Overall, I believe it to be a well featured radio. The buttons are easy to use, and are intuitive after a little reading. The mic has a good heft to it, and feels comfortable in the hand. I really like that there is a mic lockout and channel up and down buttons right on the mic.

MXT400VP3 Bundle for GMRS
MXT400VP3 is a great little radio. Put it on a power/swr meter showed 1:1 SWR and 63 watts in 40 watt mode. Only complaint instruction book says nothing about using the 2nd set of channels by tuning the knob farther after simplex channel 22 to display to change to see +/- and Rp mode display in the window for repeater mode.

Great Radio for Overlanding
I recently purchased the MXT400 bundle and am very happy with it thus far. Installation was very easy and to the point. I can communicate clearly with friends/family who have similar radios as we travel on and off road on our adventures. I'd highly recommend this setup to anyone interested in a good radio when traveling,

Nice Mobile but Receives Poorly!
I like this radio and it is the second one that I purchased, but they receive poorly! A simple hand held radio receives better than these radios on a magnet mount that is recommended and properly tuned on top of my pickup truck. I had one in my truck in Fall of 2018 in Northwoods WI and a guy standing beside my truck with a hand held radio was picking up another hand held a few miles away and my mobile wasn't even receiving the signal at all.

Great Set-up
This is my second MXT 400. The bundle was perfect because I needed a mount and it came with a very good antenna. This is a great radio for those just getting into GMRS communications. Midland makes a great product.

QUESTIONS
Is there an option to have the radio power on when power is applied? Meaning, if I cycle the vehicle key will the radio come back on by itself or do I have to turn it on every time?
Hello! The MXT400 will return to it's last on/off condition when power is applied.

What kind of range can you expect with this small 3dB antenna?
Anywhere from 10-40 miles depending on the terrain.

Is this base a GMRS or FRS?
The MXT400 (and all others in the MicroMobile line) is GMRS. FRS radios are limited to fixed antennas and less than 2W of transmitting power.

My daughter works Wash DC and lives 45 mil South in Manassas VA. I live mid. Prepping for EMP. Will the advertised 299.00 bundle work range wise. I95 runs the length of the route. Son in law works fm home. I would run base from Goal Zero 1250 Yeti.
Hello,
These radios are GMRS repeater capable radios, so if there are repeaters in your area they might work for your use. Unfortunately, without the use of a repeater you are going to have some terrain between you that will make that 45 miles difficult. Check with mygmrs.com which is a solid repeater database website.

How hard is it to make the 400 a base station
Not hard at all, you simply need a power supply and the necessary coax cable length for an external antenna. The MXT400 40W units have a maximum current specification of 10 amps and should be used with a power source capable of 10 amps or more. Antenna and mounting really depend on situation and budget. This bundle would certainly get you started!

Does this or any other radio carry a IP6X rating? I will be using it on a side by side getting it very wet and muddy.
In the MicroMobile line, not at this time. However, we are working on updates, accessories, etc specifically for side by sides! Currently we recommend the MXT275 for this application as you can hide the box away and only have the handheld mic unit out. We have had many people tell us this really helps. Additionally with the unit mentioned (MXT275) you can take the radio out of the mounting bracket in inside for added safety.

What is the best handheld radio to use with this micromobile?
The GXT1000 series radios would be your best bet. They are the highest allowable power in a GMRS handheld on the market currently.
