Fall is here, but that doesn't mean the adventure has to stop. Midland Radio is sharing its favorite fall hike destinations and the radios you need for a safe adventure.

SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK

Virginia 

Shenandoah National Park is about 75 miles outside of Washington, D.C.

The park is full of waterfalls, picturesque vistas, beautiful wildfowers, and peaceful wooded hollows. Hikers could run into deer, songbirds, and black bears as the park has over 200,000 acres of protected lands. 

Along the Blue Rdige Mountains, the ever famouns Appalachian Trail runs the entire length of the park. 

With over 500 miles of hiking trails to explore, experts say Shenandoah National Park is home to some of the best hiking in the country. The 23 trails include day hikes and backcountry camping. 

Here are some of the top hikes in Shenandoah National Park:

  • Little Stony Man- 30 to 60 minutes, labeled easy difficulty level
  •  Stony Man- Up to one hour, easy difficult level
  • Bearfence Mountain Trail- One hour, moderate difficulty level
  • Marys Rock- Two to three hours, easy to moderate difficulty level
  • Old Rag- Five to seven hours, strenuous difficulty level
  • Lewis Spring Falls Trail- Two to three hours, strenuous difficulty level

ARCADIA NATIONAL PARK

Maine

Arcadia National Park encompasses almost 50,000 acres along the Atlantic Coastline of Maine. This includes Mount Desert Island, the Schoodic Peninsula, Isle au Haut, and several other outer islands. 

With over 60 miles of coastline, 33 miles of scenic motor roads, 45 miles of carriage roads, and over 150 miles of hiking trails, there are a variety of ways to explore the park.  

Hikes throughout Acadia National Park vary in difficulty levels- from easygoing strolls towards the seaside to demanding hikes to the summits. However, don't worry, those difficult trails have iron hand-holds connected to the granite walls as it can be incredibly slick.

ARCHES NATIONAL PARK

Utah

Head to Utah to visit the unique landscape of Arches National Park. 

It's full of contrasting colors, land forms, and textures unlike any other. With over 2,000 natural stone arches, hundreds of soaring pinnacles, gigantic rock fins, and large balanced rocks. The red-rock park is a paradise that will amaze adventurers with its formations, trails, and sunsets.

Arches National Park offers hikers a variety of different trails. Most of the trails are rated easy to moderate. By taking on the hikes, adventurers will get to see the striking views that aren't visible from the road. 

According to the National Park Service, many of the trails use cairns (stacks of rocks) for markers and cross broad rock surfaces, meaning it does require attention to follow along.
