March 18, 2025 marks National AG Day.

To mark the day, Midland is taking a look at agriculture across the country by breaking down a report from the US Department of Agriculture. 

Number of farms

According to the US Department of Agriculture, the number of farms in the United States in 2023 was estimated at 1,894,950.

This was down by 5,700 in 2022. 

Sales in 2023

Here's the breakdown of sales farms brought in during the year of 2023. 

  • 48% of all farms had less than $10,000 in sales
  • 79% of all farms had less than $100,000 in sales
  • 9.7% of all farms had sales of $500,000 or more in sales

Land in farms

The US Department of Agriculture found that the total land in farms decreased in 2023. The total land in farms in 2023 was 878,560,000 acres. This decreased by 1,100,000 acres in 2022. 

According to the report, the largest change for 2023 was producers in Sales Class $1,000,000 or more operated 14,160,000 more acres than in 2022. 

In 2023, 26.2% of all farmland was operated by farms with less than $100,000 in sales. At the same time, 49.8% of all farmland was managed by farms with sales of $500,000 or more. 

The average farm size for 2023 was 464 acres. Up from 463 acres in 2022.
