NOAA Weather Radio was designed to be an indoor tornado siren. That’s because outdoor sirens are there to warn you only when you are standing outdoors. And during large tornado outbreaks, there may be too many warnings for TV and radio stations to broadcast in a timely manner.

So this device sitting beside you is actually an automatic alerting siren.  And it’s loud.  But what if it’s too loud?  What if it wakes the kids, disturbs the patients, startles the cat, or otherwise outperforms its 80 decibel alert function?  What if 80 decibels isn’t loud enough for your noisy factory?

If you want a weather radio that visibly alerts you with noiseless but attention-grabbing light, set the radio’s ALERT TYPE to SILENT to disable its audible alert tone.  Next, plug a strobe light into the EXTERNAL ALERT PORT on the back of the radio.  The super bright STR180 strobe attracts attention even when you’re not looking in its direction.  And the alert comes to you just as quickly as before. Mount the strobe on the wall or place it on a desk or table and its flashing light will illuminate the entire room.

If you work in a “silence please” environment, or in a place that requires hearing protection due to extreme noise, the super bright STR180 strobe alerts you visibly.  When the strobe goes off, check the display window for a description of the alert, then press WEATHER/SNOOZE to hear the official message. Pressing WEATHER/SNOOZE again will turn off your Midland weather radio. Ahhhh…silence.

Everyone should have multiple, redundant methods of receiving warnings, and a weather radio/strobe combination is perfect for many people because it’s a siren that doesn’t need to make noise to alert you.

Remember, if you're looking to learn how to turn off Midland weather radio, setting your NOAA Weather Radio to 'silent' mode is the easiest way. NOAA Weather Radio is the official “Voice of the National Weather Service”, and remains the fastest, most direct way to receive official bulletins. At home, at school, at work…weather radios save lives.
