Breaking down S.A.M.E. Technology- How it Keeps You Safe
When severe weather strikes, every second counts.
That's where Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.) technology comes into play.
What is S.A.M.E. technology
S.A.M.E. technology ensures people receive timely and accurate alerts specific to their location.Â
Be it a tornado, severe thunderstorm, hurricane, or flash flood, this technology brings critical information to save lives with localized warnings through NOAA Weather Radios.Â
By only alerting specific counties, this cuts down on unwanted alerts for listeners.
How S.A.M.E. technology works
When issuing an alert, the National Weather Service uses the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to send a digital code before and after each alert message. These go through NOAA Weather Radio transmitters.
S.A.M.E. NOAA Weather Radios act as EAS decoders to decipher what the alert is and which county it is intended for.Â
Programming a S.A.M.E. device
Each county in the United States has a 6-digit S.A.M.E. code to program into a receiver.Â
1. Find your S.A.M.E code
Before programming your S.A.M.E. device, you'll need the code for your county. To do so, visit the National Weather Service.Â
2. Follow the owner's manual for your deviceÂ
3. Program your device
Using Midland's devices, programming your device has never been easier.
You'll just go through the menu to do so. In the menu, you'll find "Set Location." Select this option.
You can choose to program a signal location or multiple. Use the up and down arrows to make your selection.Â
You'll then choose USA by pressing select.Â
After selecting this, you'll have to program your state and county.Â
Here, you'll use the up and down arrows to choose the state in which you're wanting to receive alerts from. Press select once finding that state.
After selecting the correct state, you'll be taken to a list of counties. Use the arrows once again to find the correct county. Press select once you've found the correct county.Â
Your radio is now programmed!
4. Receive S.A.M.E. messages
Now that your radio is programmed, you can start using your S.A.M.E. device to receive alerts about impending severe weather and emergencies.
These alerts will give your household the time needed to seek shelter, put the emergency plan into action, and ensure safety for everyone.Â
