FAQ's

Do I need a license to operate these?
No! Under FCC regulations, FRS radios (transmitting power limited to 2 Watts and lower) do not need a license to operate, even if used in a business setting.
What sort of range can I get with this radio?
Range will always depend on conditions as radios operate from line of sight. With normal conditions, if you imagine an off-road scenario, this 15 Watt radio will have a range of about 5-8 miles. We recommend using an upgraded Midland GMRS antenna to maximize that range.
Does the 3 dB Ghost antenna require a ground plane?
All the current Midland antenna offerings require a ground plane to perform as expected. In general the minimum size for a ground plane is considered a ½ wavelength across or about 12” for GMRS frequencies. Steel or aluminum can serve as a ground plane and it doesn’t need to be a continuous plane. Some antennas like the MXTA26 may perform acceptably without a ground plane, while others such as the MXTA25 may perform poorly without some ground plane.
