X-GMRS Base Camp is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine small radio This radio does a great job on all bands. I put the frequencies and some codes in my 40 w GMRS base and vehicles and reception and transmissions were very good. Make sure you have a GMRS license to use the radio. Two things came to me: first, I put the radio on charge for 10 hours, and when I turned it on, nothing happened. I removed the battery packed then reseated it, and it came on fine. Secondly, I would like to see a new model which would make use of GMRS repeaters like the micro mobiles do. Even at an added cost, this would certainly be worth it. All in all, this is a very good radio, and I would recommend it to anybody who has a need for good communications.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every Home I did a review on YouTube of this radio and love it. Just after I did the review Midland discontinued the base camp. Viewers on my channel wrote it was back and I had to check. I am so happy this is back. I think every family should have one. You get an AM/FM radio, a NOAA weather radio with alert, a 5 watt GMRS 2 way radio, a flashlight, and a hand crank phone charger. All that plus 4 ways to power AA, Midland rechargeables, 12v, and 110v. This is an incredible product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of camping equipment. I've been using the Base Camp radio for a month now. The range and performance on HI power are what we'd expect. The convenient footprint and carry handle allows for handy placement on our camp table to maintain contact with our family campers. The multiple power source feature keeps the batteries charged and operational. The AM/FM/WX broadcast receiving helps us feel secure. The radio is NOT waterproof and should be kept away from direct rain or water hazards. Great piece of camping equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from X-GMRS Base Camp Radio Bought 2 of the X-GMRS Base Camp Radios recently. One is for my 78yo mother who lives down the street not quite a half mile away and one for myself. The radios have made it very easy for her to communicate with me and have provided her with the comfort of knowing that she can reach me even if the utilities go down in a storm. Easy to use and none of the background noise we use to have with CB radios. (Yes I am old too).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet little radio I live in Texas and work in Oklahoma City. Weather has to be constantly monitored; so it appears. The fear of hail has been causing me to sleep only a few hour a night during questionable weather. This radio massively improved my sleep. It has the added feature of GMRS communication. I have Midland GMRS radios in my both my cars, my truck, my motor cycle, and even my airplane. It's great for letting the little lady know where I am...hmmm. This radio gets great AM/FM reception and works great for us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality This is my SECOND XT511 unit. Love the first one I purchased. Excellent build quality and design, and performs well. Got a second unit just as a spare for a SHTF situation. I am a veteran of U.S.Navy Fleet Intgerlligence, and I know well the value of good communication. This is a vital piece of my families survival equipment. GOOD GEAR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Owned Several Years This is one fantastic GMRS radio with lots of useful features. It transmit at the maximum five watts allowed. Glad to see this available again. Works great with our handhelds as well as our 40-watt mobile GRMS units. Be certain to get a GMRS license before using.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Bought several I waited several years for the re-release of this radio and I'm not disappointed. The flashlight, ability to charge the radio and a phone, and the weather alert functions are especially handy. Be sure to use alkaline batteries though; the rechargeable one is okay, but alkaline batteries last several days under AM/FM, flashlight, and periodic two-way use.

Can one use LITHIUM batteries instead of alkaline batteries?  It is my understanding that lithium batteries — although more expense — are leak resistant, lighter weight, work well in frigid conditions, hold a charge longer, and more powerful too.

Asked by: Fred Garvin, M.P.
Yes, you can use lithium AA batteries with this radio.

I was looking at getting the xt511 for home and getting the portable 75-822 for my vehicle. Can this two platforms communicate with each other?

Asked by: Brandn
No, the XT511 runs on GMRS frequency and the 75-822 runs on citizen band frequency. Check out our MicroMobiles that run on GMRS frequency if you want something compatible with the XT511. GMRS frequency allows for up to 50 watts of power compared to only 4 watts with CB.

Does the XT511 "SCAN" function scan all the CTCSS/DCS "privacy" codes such that when it finds an active channel it also identifies the CTCSS/DCS code in use?

Asked by: SeaDog
Negative, it does not scan and identify privacy codes in use

Is it possible to use the radio (receive and transmit on gmrs, monitor the wx) while charging and plugged in the AC or DC power?

Asked by: Jay143
It is possible to use either while charging, but not both at the same time. You can transmit while charging, and you can listen to the WX broadcast and charge. A switch has to be moved from AM to FM to WX to GMRS depending on your needs.
