X-GMRS Base Camp is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 40.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine small radio This radio does a great job on all bands. I put the frequencies and some codes in my 40 w GMRS base and vehicles and reception and transmissions were very good. Make sure you have a GMRS license to use the radio. Two things came to me: first, I put the radio on charge for 10 hours, and when I turned it on, nothing happened. I removed the battery packed then reseated it, and it came on fine. Secondly, I would like to see a new model which would make use of GMRS repeaters like the micro mobiles do. Even at an added cost, this would certainly be worth it. All in all, this is a very good radio, and I would recommend it to anybody who has a need for good communications.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every Home I did a review on YouTube of this radio and love it. Just after I did the review Midland discontinued the base camp. Viewers on my channel wrote it was back and I had to check. I am so happy this is back. I think every family should have one. You get an AM/FM radio, a NOAA weather radio with alert, a 5 watt GMRS 2 way radio, a flashlight, and a hand crank phone charger. All that plus 4 ways to power AA, Midland rechargeables, 12v, and 110v. This is an incredible product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great piece of camping equipment. I've been using the Base Camp radio for a month now. The range and performance on HI power are what we'd expect. The convenient footprint and carry handle allows for handy placement on our camp table to maintain contact with our family campers. The multiple power source feature keeps the batteries charged and operational. The AM/FM/WX broadcast receiving helps us feel secure. The radio is NOT waterproof and should be kept away from direct rain or water hazards. Great piece of camping equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from X-GMRS Base Camp Radio Bought 2 of the X-GMRS Base Camp Radios recently. One is for my 78yo mother who lives down the street not quite a half mile away and one for myself. The radios have made it very easy for her to communicate with me and have provided her with the comfort of knowing that she can reach me even if the utilities go down in a storm. Easy to use and none of the background noise we use to have with CB radios. (Yes I am old too).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sweet little radio I live in Texas and work in Oklahoma City. Weather has to be constantly monitored; so it appears. The fear of hail has been causing me to sleep only a few hour a night during questionable weather. This radio massively improved my sleep. It has the added feature of GMRS communication. I have Midland GMRS radios in my both my cars, my truck, my motor cycle, and even my airplane. It's great for letting the little lady know where I am...hmmm. This radio gets great AM/FM reception and works great for us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comprehensive Compact Communication Capability This Midland Radio is allows for communication anywhere it can be carried; in the RV, at home, on a camping trip. And, it compliments our other Midland communication equipment. With Jeep Jamborees adopting GMRS communication, as well as our 4WD Club becoming more interested in moving away from CB, I recently acquired my FCC license, purchased a Midland Micro Mobile, 3 DB & 6 DB antennas as well as the deluxe internal speaker. Clear radio communication!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality This is my SECOND XT511 unit. Love the first one I purchased. Excellent build quality and design, and performs well. Got a second unit just as a spare for a SHTF situation. I am a veteran of U.S.Navy Fleet Intgerlligence, and I know well the value of good communication. This is a vital piece of my families survival equipment. GOOD GEAR.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Owned Several Years This is one fantastic GMRS radio with lots of useful features. It transmit at the maximum five watts allowed. Glad to see this available again. Works great with our handhelds as well as our 40-watt mobile GRMS units. Be certain to get a GMRS license before using.

Do I need a special license to use any of your radios?

Asked by: T.Johnson
Anything over 2 watts requires a GMRS (general mobile radio service) license, you need to register with the FCC at fcc.gov

Is there a Cb counterpart to the XT511 Basecamp that has similar functions and platform? I would buy a CB version of the XT511 and a couple 75-822 same day if there were. I just don't need a gmrs too.

Asked by: Vincent
No, we do not have a CB equivalent to the XT511 basecamp GMRS radio unfortunately.

Does this come with a BATT-5R or a BATT-5RX? Will a BATT-5RX recharge in this radio?

Asked by: matunos
Hello, the XT511 Base Camp will come with the BATT-5R. The BATT-5RX is also known as the AVP17 and is compatible with the XT511.

Can a larger antenna be switched out onto this unit?

Asked by: J_M_
You could in theory switch out the antenna as it comes attached with a hex screw. However, we do not offer other antennas for the unit.

In reading the on-line manual it states to charge the Ni-Cads for 12 hours; Does this mean it is not recommended to leave the unit pluged in for extended times? I am thinking of using it primarily as a bedside WX Alert radio.

Asked by: Uncle_Dave
The unit should not be left plugged in and trickle charging for extended periods of time. The NiMH battery life will gradually be reduced if the unit is left plugged in.

If I have the radio on FM for music and someone calls on 2 way will the radio switch to the 2 way mode to receive and then transmit a response. Also will WX emergencies break in on whatever mode the radio is in to alert.

Asked by: Nicholas
Two-way radio calls will not be received while the radio is in any other mode. The only receiver that is active while in the other modes is the WX alert receiver, and only when the weather alert function is enabled. Also the switch to weather mode after an alert is received is not automatic, the user must move the switch to listen to the WX broadcast.

We have this unit, also a pair of GXT1000 handhelds, all excellent. If the Camp Base has 5 watts of power, does that change either its transmission or reception range with the handhelds, beyond what they have with each other?

Asked by: Jim FTL
Hi Jim, you will be able to transmit further with the more powerful XT511 and will be able to hear that transmission with the handhelds. Depending on far out you are you may not be able to transmit back to the XT511 from the handheld since they dont have as much power.
