AN "AMERICAN DREAM"

Jose Valdez opened up Paleterias Tropicana, a Mexican ice cream shop, when he moved to the United States over a decade ago. They own five locations across the Kansas City area. This business is their “American Dream."

“When we started the business, it was just us. When I say us I mean my two daughters, my wife, and myself. We started in 2004.“

To them, it is all about offering a unique product that other immigrants might miss seeing in their home country.

“They can come here to our stores, feeling like they’re at home.”

THE NEED TO COMMUNICATE

The business is big…serving homemade ice cream, shakes, appetizers, tortas, and even churros.

Keeping in touch throughout the store is crucial. That is why they use Midland radios to communicate.

“Instead of running from the east side, to the westside, to the north side, we can just push a button and say, ‘Hey, we are busy, we need help.”

Tropicana’s favorite Midland Radio is the BizTalk BR200. Staff have been using it for the last eight years.

“They make it very easy, so easy to talk to one another. We try to stay off our phones and this replaces that and is more reliable.”

Because at the end of the day, we all need to find a way to scream for ice cream.
