It’s that time of year again — Fall Daylight Saving Time is coming to an end. Set your clocks back on November 3rd so we can fall back as we head into winter. Good news is, that means an extra hour of sleep! As we set all our clocks back an hour, there are some things we should check on and change while we’re at it.
Your Safety Checklist for Fall Daylight Saving Time
Here’s a helpful annual checklist that will help you prepare your home for the fall and winter months.
Change + Check on Batteries
This is the perfect time to check on your batteries in your NOAA weather radio, carbon monoxide detectors, and smoke alarms. Don’t forget to check your flashlights and remotes too! It is recommended that you change your batteries every year, regardless if there is life left in them or not.
Restock Your Emergency Kit (and Your Pets)
With weather changing every day, it’s important to always keep your emergency kit stocked. Food and medication may have expired, so you’ll want to check the dates and re-stock. You’ll be glad you did if you ever find yourself in an emergency. Don’t forget your furry four-legged friends–make an emergency kit for your pets today.
Reverse Your Ceiling Fans
Set your fan to spin counterclockwise in the summer so air blows down. As temperatures drop, reverse your fan to spin clockwise in winter.
Clean Your Oven and Stove
Over time, food falls into your oven and gets into your stove top. To ensure your safety clean your oven and stove top.
Check Your Lightbulbs
Don’t forget to check your lightbulbs inside and outside of your home. Use high-efficient fluorescent bulbs and stock replacement bulbs.
Check Your Furnace + Hot Water Heater
It’s recommended that you have a professional check your water heater and furnace to ensure that it is working properly all year long. The last thing you want is for your furnace or water heater to go out in the middle of winter!
Check Your Pantry + Fridge
This is the perfect time to go through your pantry and fridge and check for expired food! Once you clean them out, you can restock.
Check Your Car
Even if you don’t have any road trips planned, it’s a good idea to check your car’s:
- Windshield wiper blades
- Oil level and quality
- Tire pressure and treads
- Cold weather supplies
- Emergency kit
